VINE PRAPARATION FOR GPS MACHINE PLANTING:
  • The customer is responsible for ensuring the vines are on location and ready for planting when the GPS planting crew arrives.
  • If you are able to store the vines in a cool place such as a cold storage, fridge or cellar, keep them there until 48 hours before your planting is scheduled to occur.
  • 48 hours before planting, remove vines from cold storage keeping them out of the sun where its cooler or turn cold storage off.
  • Place vines standing up with roots down in a clean container with clean water, ensure water is changed every 48 hours if planting is delayed. DO NOT SUBMERGE BUDS! This will cause damage to them.
  • Trim roots before planting leaving about 2” to 3” of root.
FIELD PREPARATION FOR GPS MACHINE PLANTING:
  • deep rip soil crosswise to 18″
  • cultivate very finely to 12″ or so. The soil needs to close around the root. clumps around roots cause air pockets drying the roots

For soil management and nutrition, please see: http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/hort/news/orchnews/2018/on-0418a3.htm

Damage to the machine and time loss as a result of poor field preparation may be charged to the customer.

Here are a few of the advantages with GPS planting:

Efficiency
–          Depending on field & block layout and assuming your soil is properly prepared upon our arrival we can plant in excess of 15,000 vines daily.
–          We can install vine stakes simultaneously as we plant the vines to eliminate an extra step.
–          Accuracy of planting allows for better use of mechanical vineyard maintenance tools over the life of the vineyard.

Precision
–          If soil is properly prepared the GPS planting equipment is accurate to +/- 1 cm spacing for both the row and vine dimensions.
–          Accuracy is maintained through undulating topography for perfect vine placement.
–          Accurate plantings allow for future plantings to have their spacing matched up more easily for picture perfect planting.

Vineyard Health
–          Root depth and placement is uniform and planter is adjusted to minimize “J” rooting for faster plant establishment and longevity of vineyard life.
–          Accuracy of planting reduces risk of damage from mechanical maintenance tools.
